First Prize for Standortentwicklung Freie Waldorfschule

Winking · Froh  Architects have won the cooperative competition for the urban development of the site of the independent Waldorf-school in Berlin-Mitte. The protected buildings between Steinstrasse and Weinmeisterstrasse are going to be extended in different stages. The jury argued for the urbanistic lay-out of the scheme: The filling of the gap at Steinstrasse leaves the existing building from 1951 exposed by extending the gable wall with a layer and adding a glazed lobby in the courtyard. The after-school-club preserves the spaciousness of the schoolyard and assigns an outdoor unit to each of the two floors. As a new “head” acts the four-storey-building on Gormannstrasse, which marks the last stage of the development with an atrium-typology for the teacher seminar. This “head” becomes the new address approaching the Waldorf-school from the direction of Hackescher Markt. Together with the neoclassical hall, its green courtyard and the new headmaster’s unit in front of the firewall the “head” will regroup the parts to a coherent ensemble. The entries were on display from august 21st until September 5th in front of the school’s assembly hall.
