The BDA Hamburg Architecture Prize was awarded on 24 November. Winking - Froh Architekten were honoured with two first prizes. The jury, chaired by Prof. Andreas Hild, praised the new studio building for the University of Fine Arts as a ‘useful addition. The new studio building asserts itself next to the mighty main building of the HFBK by Fritz Schumacher with quiet peculiarities: the slight twist from the street line, the sloping frames of the floor-to-ceiling openings, the flat façade made of irregularly fired clinker brick. A robust building that impresses on the inside with its structural beauty and openness of use: the urgently needed studio rooms and an exhibition space at street level are arranged equally around the central core with its surrounding staircase and building-high air space. The stringent floor plan, the raw building charm with exposed concrete walls and ribbed ceilings - all this gives the building a workshop character in which art and the students' production conditions play the main role.’
