1st Prize at the BDA Hamburg Architectural Award for the Pergolenviertel

The BDA Hamburg Architecture Prize was awarded on 24 November 2022. Winking - Froh Architekten were honoured with two first prizes. The jury, chaired by Prof. Andreas Hild, praised the residential courtyards of the Pergolenviertel as ‘A useful addition. In terms of scale and mixed use, the pergola neighbourhood takes Hamburg back to the large reform housing estates of the 1920s and their dream of a good life for all. Although the urban planning by E2A Architekten sets strict guidelines for the design of the architecture, the award-winning offices succeed in interpreting these independently, from the colour scheme and decorative elements of the clinker brick façades to the differentiation of floor plans, loggias and balconies and the use of the round arch motif, which gives the residential area its visual identity. The community-oriented basic idea of the neighbourhood is reflected architecturally in the serial, in some cases almost industrial character of the new buildings, which house shops, social facilities and even a swimming pool in addition to a variety of housing options. With the large residential courtyards and allotment gardens within walking distance, a piece of green, lively city has been created that is not only desirable for Hamburg.’
